Description

Two volumes bound in one; two letterpress title pages set within double-rule borders, both with engraved vignettes; 211 engraved plates (numbered 1-100 in vol. I with 7 additional unnumbered plates - one between plts 25 & 26, two between plts 32 & 33, one between plates 60 & 61 and three at the end; in vol. II the plates are numbered 101-200, with two plts numbered 187 and three unnumbered plts at the end). Plates generally in excellent condition with generous margins - some plates to the lower edge have not been trimmed displaying the natural end of the original sheet; a few plates with very slight, small water stains confined to the edges, a couple with light creases, as much original paper faults as anything else, several lightly dust marked, one image with a very small stain. Later 20 century binding retaining the original boards and backstrip, very good with a little rubbing. Front end paper with neat gift inscription. A very good copy. Notes: Generally recognized as Vasi's masterpiece and at the same time one of the most remarkable artistic records of Rome.
