NEW NATURALIST

We have a new stock of exceptional titles from one collected all purchased new and carefully looked after. Please just contact us directly if you are interested in information on any title.

Sales of titles from this series are very strong at present. We put a lot of effort into sourcing exceptional books but we have also decided to put together runs that will make good reading copies or an affordable green back set.

The Collins New Naturalist Series are our main specialist area and we hold a substantial stock, perhaps the largest anywhere to be found. The New Naturalist books cover most areas of British Natural history, presenting the results of modern scientific research in an attractive way. The New Naturalist books consist of two series, the main series and the monographs (though the main series includes monographs too). The main series is still published, currently around three titles a year, though no new titles have been added to the monograph series since 1971.

New Naturalists have become a collecting sensation, this is in part due to their excellent content and in part their superb dust jackets, formally designed by Clifford and Rosemary Ellis and subsequently by Robert Gillmor. Books afford the opportunity to marry art and science and perhaps this is achieved no where better than in this series.

The rarest new naturalists are No’s 70 – 81with the very rarest of all being No. 70, Natural History of Orkney and No. 71 British Warblers of which only 725 first state, first edition hard back copies of each were printed.  These titles will cost you £1500 and upwards – if you can find a copy at all!
First editions are favoured over reprints and later editions command around 50% more value. Condition of the dust jacket has the greatest influence on price and in reality a fine dust jacket is worth (in monetary terms) far more than the book; for instance a fine copy of No. 41 Dragonflies in a fine dust jacket may cost £500, but the same book without a dust jacket may cost a quarter of this -and to boot, the former is likely to sell much more quickly than the latter! Whilst some of the early titles were printed in large numbers and there are multiple examples being offered on Abebooks and elsewhere on the internet, they are often difficult to find in true fine condition; that is with bright jackets, that are not foxed or soiled, that are not chipped or torn. Expect to pay a significant premium for such a book - when you finally track one down.

Lastly, we are always happy to hear from anyone interested in New Naturalist books, so please do get in touch whatever your query might be. Of course we are always looking to purchase these books if you are thinking of selling and will pay top prices.
